Photo Rules and Alignment Tools - Free plugin (Free and Studio)

This plugin provide overlays for photo rules and adjustable alignment tools directly from the edit page.

The file Photo Rules Overlay.DRFX will download from Google Drive in a new window.

How to use

Once installed, drag and drop the Photo Rules Overlay effect to the clip to be adjusted in the timeline.

With the clip selected go to the "Inspector" and open "Effects" to enable the wanted overlay and adjust as required.

If use on an adjustment clip is recommended to lock the adjustment clip as the Inspector will otherwise default to the highest track (the adjustment clip) and not to the track with the clip to be adjusted.
Note that the effect, the overlay, can still be modified with the adjustment track locked.

The Rule Of Thirds is a "rule of thumb" for composing visual images (filmspaintings, photographs). The image is divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. Important compositional elements (persons, faces, main subject, horizon..) is placed along these lines ("power lines") or their intersections (power points). Aligning a subject with these lines/points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.

The Golden Ratio is used the same way as the rule of thirds but is based on a ratio found in nature 1:1.618 (see also The Golden Spiral). The resulting composition is closer to the centre of the frame.

There are plenty of great articles on how to use the rule of thirds and the golden ratio to be found on the web - with much better examples than me drinking beer in the nature...
The Golden Spiral, directly related to the golden ratio a shape found in nature and frequently used in classic painting.

The golden spiral is a logarithmic spiral whose growth factor is φ, the golden ratio. That is, a golden spiral gets wider (or further from its origin) by a factor of φ
for every quarter turn it makes.

The Horizon allows, in addition to straighten the horizon, to keep the horizon at the same level between subsequent clips. This smoothens the transition by eliminating a vertical visual shift/jump.
The line can be adjusted in level and rotation.

Reference points can be used to align subjects between clips so that they subject reappears in the same position (eye trace) and/or proportions.

Tip: Place a point in each eye and align portraits (clips or images) with DaVinci Resolve "smooth cut"
in-between for a face morphing effect..
The Controls

The Photo Rules Overlay is controlled from the Effects tab in the Inspector.

All 5 overlays are turned off by default, use the tick boxes to enable.

Line
thickness adjusts the line thickness of the overlay.

The
Golden Spiral can be flipped both horizon alt and vertically.

Both level and angle of the
Horizon line can be adjusted.

The 4
Reference points can be moved individually.
